French startup Weglot closed a $50 million (€45 million) Series A funding round from PartTech. The company has developed a website translation solution. This will help you add more languages to your site without much setup and without having to switch to another CMS or eCommerce platform.

And you need to understand the position of Weglot. Shopify plugins for WordPress translation have been around for a while. But Weglot wants to create a universal product that will work for all types of web applications.

There are two ways to take advantage of Weglot. You can add it to your existing website with a plugin, which is how Weglot works with WordPress, Shopify, Wix, and WooCommerce. If you have a small business and don’t have a dedicated web developer, you can install Weglot without writing a single line of code.

Another way: You can add some lines of javascript in <head> Tag your website. Webflow for Webflow, Squarespace and BigCommerce uses this approach. You also need to change your DNS records to create subdomains or subdirectories for the new languages.

On Weglot’s servers, the Company automatically locates and retrieves content from the Site. Weglot customers can use machine translation to get started with new languages.

The company also provides a dashboard so you can dive into your content and better translate it. From this interface, you can grant access to professional translators and manage translations.

After that, you have a multilingual site. Whenever a visitor loads your site, it will load in their preferred language by default. You can also add a language switcher to the corner of your website if you want to provide multiple options.

While translations are stored on Weglot’s servers, Weglot creates special subdirectories or subdomains for each language. This allows Google and other search engines to index any language version of your site. Metadata and keywords can also be translated using Weglot.

The startup charges a monthly subscription fee based on the number of languages and words you need. Last year, Weglot’s annual recurring revenue reached $11 million (€10 million). Not bad for a startup that hasn’t raised outside capital since it launched in 2017.
