  • “From small to strong”: Fintech reporter Mary Ann Azevedo touched on some financial news today. First, she wrote about Cross River Bank, which received a massive $620 million round, bringing its valuation to over $3 billion. This is not surprising given the amount of venture capital pouring into the sector. However, not only was Cross River one of the first recipients of fintech funding, raising $30 million in 2016, but it has been profitable since 2010.
  • Helping CFOs Manage High GrowthMary Ann’s second story was about a Palantir alum who set out to empower high-growth CFOs with tools. Mosaic has raised $25 million in Series B funding from the Founders Fund, in what the company calls the “strategic finance” category, to develop all departments of the company to talk about finance. As you grow up, it is certainly important to know your financial situation.
  • Dyson wants you to wear a mask: Reporter Brian Hayter won the award of the day for his article on, you guessed it, Dyson’s new portable air purifier.

Startups and venture capitalists

It’s the second day of Y Combinator Demo Day and the gaming-updates team is back in business, adding a glimpse of fur to your reading pleasure. How to make a teaser trailer for your startup?

When you have the opportunity to sell your idea to an investor, it will most likely be via a video call rather than at a table or desk.

“This new presentation model creates a new challenge for founders,” said Flint Capital partner Andrew Gershfeld, whose company estimates “about 1,500 online presentations a year.”

To reduce the noise, he recommends that founders create “teaser trailers” and share them with their networks before you start contacting angels and venture capitalists.

According to Gershfeld, “because we don’t have the same opportunities as face-to-face meetings, the founders can get the attention of investors.”

  • start with friends: The latest update to Spotify’s own Blend playlist tool lets you see where your musical tastes match up with a friend’s, and then get an overall playlist.
  • google is busy: If you haven’t signed up to Google during the day, we have news for you. First, Google Workspace customers who are also Markdown fans have received good news in an update that Google Docs can now automatically convert Markdown markup to rich text. Next, we move on to Chrome OS, which is launching a new version of its operating system—one hundredth, to be exact. One of the changes you’ll notice is the launcher, which we’re reporting now has room for other windows. Finally, Google has improved its search security and how it handles “personal crisis” requests.
  • The EU wants products to last longer so they don’t end up in landfills.: With the rapid transition to a circular economy, the EU is developing some eco-design schemes to make products last longer so they can be reused or recycled.
  • Whatsapp Voice Messages 7B: Reporter Manish Singh admits that WhatsApp has never been used to send voice messages – only to find it is in the minority. The communications giant has said that an average of 7 billion voice messages are sent through its app every day, and to celebrate, it’s adding a few new features such as pausing messages and hitting “send” before being able to hear them.
  • Visa joins the NFT movementNFT: The NFT trend has certainly impacted the e-commerce world, and credit card giant Visa is looking to take action. The new NFT Creator Program is designed to help small businesses enter the digital economy through a year-long immersion program.
