The company confirmed that Reddit is exploring the idea of posting more user-generated video content on its online discussion forums. Not much else is known about this potential new video feature, which we haven’t tested yet. But we understand that this may include using video editing tools like TikTok, which primarily allows people to “comment” on people-posted videos by adding their own videos to other people’s videos.

The ability to combine videos of different people became popular on TikTok thanks to features called Stitches and Couples, which were later adopted to varying degrees by TikTok’s competitors, including Reels on Instagram and Spotlight on Snapchat.

However, in the case of Reddit, the goal is not to create a creator-focused TikTok competitor of its own, as other major social giants have done, but to create a video tool that aims to empower its users. Will continue Reddit’s mission. Participate in discussions about topics they care about. Today, many of these Reddit discussions are written in text, but video responses can add another layer to these online conversations. (To be clear, videos are already supported on the Reddit platform, but video comments – much like “stitching” – are not.)

The company will contact various communities, known as subreddits, to determine if they are interested in discovering such videos. In particular, he will look at certain communities where he thinks the video feature could be a good product. But these public trials have not yet begun.

“In line with our work to help people connect with topics that matter to them through social audio, video, text, memes, and more, we are reaching out to some Reddit communities to see or see the new video feature. . We’re working on something they’ll find useful and enjoyable,” Reddit spokesperson gaming-updates confirmed. “After receiving feedback from Redditors, we will explore a preliminary test of this new feature,” he said. Feather.

A potential “comments” feature in a new video project was first spotted by iOS developer Steve Moser. Other video editing tools may also be part of the tests, including but not limited to adding effects, filters, and stickers to Music-supported videos. Some of these features were added to the Reddit Camera app last November as part of Reddit’s ongoing video work.

In December 2020, Reddit expressed interest in expanding video further after acquiring TikTok rival Dubsmash. This year, the company shut down the app after it first worked on integrating a startup video tool into Reddit. As part of this integration, Reddit announced that it will be introducing new camera features, including the ability to set timers and change the shooting speed, use effects, add voice-overs, trim and edit multiple clips. fit and more. Today, Reddit users can access these video features using the New Record tool, then select the video option and choose Camera to record a video.

Also, last summer, Reddit tested a TikTok-style video feed on its iOS app that, when clicked, showed a stream of short videos in a vertical feed. Users can upvote, downvote, comment, give gifts, or share videos from this feed, then swipe up to see more.

None of the projects are directly related to the upcoming video test, which aims to explore a new use case for video on the platform. But they say that the underlying video technology acquired from Dubsmash is involved.

Since this product is still in a very early stage – not even in alpha testing yet – a lot can change. It is also possible that the Reddit community is not interested in testing such a video product and the idea is abandoned.

The video feature appears to be inspired by TikTok, which already allows creators to create discussions via video comments. The feature has since been cloned by other social apps, including Pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram. But perhaps reddit video discussion is more in line with the idea put forward in the early 2000s by the (apparently ahead of its time) startup Seismic, which once suggested that people posting would comment on blogs and other text-based content. Video comments. It seems that the old has become new again.
