If “great obedience” has taught us anything, it’s that people want to be valued, respected, and well paid for their work.

With an average layoff rate of 30%, employee turnover has always been a problem in the restaurant and hospitality industry. This is where Land comes in.

The company bills itself as “the first end-to-end recruitment engine for the restaurant and hospitality industry” that automates the process of hiring, attracting and interviewing candidates. Matching and conversational AI technology connects candidates with employers based on customizable criteria and over 50 data points, helping restaurants and hospitality businesses quickly hire the best candidates.

The San Francisco Bay Area company was founded in March 2020 by Vivian Wang, who began her career as dishwashers and waitresses at local Chinese restaurants before becoming software engineers two decades later.

“I realized that workers want to make a career and climb the corporate ladder,” she said. “Then I saw how the gig economy of companies like Uber, Instacart and Lyft was thriving on a shrinking workforce. I felt that his approach was somewhat short-sighted. Workers want to acquire skills. ,

The idea for Landed came about when Wang started working for Gap Inc. where he advised the executive team on corporate strategy related to human resource management, where he first saw the problem of staff turnover for the brand and its operations.

Their solution was to use mobile technology, which would reduce the turnover rate in stores, providing long-term earning opportunities for employees.

Wang and his team brought a similar mindset to Landed and wanted to help restaurant and hospitality general managers stay lean by constantly hiring new team members.

Here’s how it works: Employees download the free LandedJobs app and create a profile where they list their work experience, location, availability, and work goals to showcase their identity instead of just typing them in. Can record short videos. The AI-powered Landed matching tool then provides employers with the best candidates near them.

On behalf of the employer, they can access the Landed Employer Portal and enter their recruitment goals and criteria. When Landed matches them with candidates, it also helps organize interviews, effectively eliminating dozens of hours of manual work per week and delivering 3.5x higher hiring rates, according to Wang.

Landed capitalizes on hundreds of employers who use its tools, including Cava, Blaze Pizza, Panera, Chick-fil-A, and Taco Bell.

In addition, the company develops financial products for its more than 150,000 active users, including training and certification programs.

“Twenty-eight percent of employees live paycheck to paycheck, and we are committed to breaking this cycle and supporting the underprivileged,” Wang said.

Landed’s revenue is up 20x in 2021, and to continue that trajectory, the company has raised $7 million in seed funding to build its workforce and grow that part of the financial fortune even further. Javelin Venture Partners and Blockchain Capital led the round with Lightspeed Venture Partners and a group of individual investors including Warby Parker, Harry, founders of the Allbirds Good Friends Fund and ThinkFood Group.

Wang said the company is looking for partners such as Javelin, who are well versed in the market, and Blockchain Capital as Landed plans to use some of the crypto technologies in the future.

With over 90 million employees in the US, they believe this large market deserves better hiring processes, especially given the current conditions.

“This is a new day for these restaurants and the employees who support the companies,” Wang said. “Our goal is to provide search and hiring automation that attracts talent, eliminates manual and labor-intensive processes, and is present throughout the entire employee lifecycle.”

Especially in the last two years, many startups have proposed approaches to solve this problem through the use of technology. Landed is one of the latest companies to receive funding, examples of which are as follows:

  • CZ has raised $18.7 million in Series A capital to help the restaurant find the best jobs.
  • Fountain announced an $85 million Series C round for its Applicant Tracking System.
  • Workstream has raised $48 million in Series B for its text based recruiting approach.
  • cut ninja Provided some upfront and seed funding to continue developing software that will allow employees to record services performed from home.
