Clubhouse is launching a secure profile setting that allows users to make their full profiles only available to people they have approved as followers, the company announced on Wednesday. This change is being introduced in response to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine in order to protect platform users.

“We are grateful that during this time we have become a meeting place for people from all over the world to connect with each other, but we also know that in times of conflict and unrest, your online presence and what you share. it’s important to know about it. ,” Clubhouse said in a post about the announcement.

You can enable the secure profile feature in the app’s settings. Once you do this, you will be able to approve your followers. Clubhouse notes that only your followers can see rooms, clubs, and replays on your profile. This option is less common than what you usually see in Clubhouse. The company states that users you have not approved as followers will not be able to see when you are online, and Clubhouse will not recommend people you do not know follow you.

The new feature comes as the club has become a platform for coordinating anti-war Russian citizens, as well as a home for Russian propaganda. Russia has blocked Instagram and Facebook, providing residents of the country with various ways to communicate, including in clubs.

In addition to today’s announcement, Clubhouse also offered ways to protect users of the social audio platform during times of conflict. The company notes that even though it has disabled the playback feature that allows audio recording by default for users in Ukraine, people can still use third-party apps to record and share content without permission or use the device. Clubhouse also urges users to be careful about the information they share verbally and through their profiles. The company also notes that while it’s important to know what you’re saying and sharing, it’s also important to remember that your voice can be an identifier.
