It seems that If you haven’t heard of eVTOLs (electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft) before, they may have come under your radar last year.
Between billions of dollars of capital, SPACs and test flights, there were countless companies touting their latest designs and technological milestones that took us one step closer to commercializing air taxis.
The billions of dollars raised by EVTOL companies last year mean only one thing in 2022: massive growth. I have been in the aircraft development industry for decades, but 2021 was a different year.
Over the next two years, I will be following four trends that will revolutionize the way these companies operate and influence how aspiring entrepreneurs and investors can participate in the development of the nascent eVTOL ecosystem.
As an investor, I will be keeping a close eye on companies wondering what urban air mobility will actually look like as opposed to experimental prototypes.
The competitive environment in the EVTOL aircraft market will expand
It’s a little rough, but it’s a hotspot and every EVTOL vehicle designer will try to stand out as much as possible. This will create an improved competitive environment between these companies as well as future operators and infrastructure and service providers.
However, it’s good. Given the large targeted market for urban air mobility and the time it takes to complete such a complex operation, the entire space, not just one or two companies, will benefit from diversification and competition.
As an investor, I will be keeping a close eye on companies that are interested in what urban air mobility will actually look like as opposed to experimental prototypes. When I talk about reality, I mean scale and maturity to a certain extent – commercial EVTOLs are big paying players in the long-term market.
Unlike commercial aircraft, which are indistinguishable from the average air passenger, most EVTOLs are of different designs. What performance differences will result from these design differences? What economic factors will be as important as the size of the industry when the glitz and glamor of the first flight demonstrations fades? Why do drivers and operators prefer some eVTOLs over others?
At present, experimental prototypes have little regard for real-world requirements such as payload and weather resistance, but if passengers want to save time on their way to the airport for a long-haul flight, they can take their luggage with them. they need to rely on EVTOL to be able to fly in weather conditions like jet aircraft.
